Week 2 Learning

This week I enjoyed reading chapter 2 on identifying the nine areas to explore for conducting action research. I found the examples helpful as they were developed and implemented by real administrators. In this week's videos, I learned to research other campuses with similar needs and to examine areas of personal interest instead of something that will look good on paper. In addition, to Google topics of interest to avoid "re-inventing the wheel".

This week I met with my principal to discuss possible topics to research. After I presented my interests, I selected researching the effects of our new mentoring program. A local church selected our campus to mentor students with low self-esteem, family issues, or academic struggles. I plan on surveying and interviewing students, parents, teachers, and the mentors to gather information. I believe researching this topic is critical to determine the current struggles students are facing at home and at school.  Another importance is to determine if the program is helping our students.

  1. Like you, I enjoyed the reading and videos as well. I have done a lot of research, but never put the research into an action that would change more than just the dealings inside my classroom. I am very pleased with what we are learning; I think that this type of work is what education needs in order to change and stay ahead of this “ever changing” world.

Thank you for your comments on my blog.

  2. I agree that not reinventing the wheel and keeping it practical, so that it ultimately has a good impact on students is the best way to go as far as a research plan. Things can become difficult if you allow them to. a mentoring program is a great idea and can have a long lasting impact on students as well as the community.

  3. I felt a great deal of relief this week in hearing the administrators in the videos state that action research was not about reinventing the wheel, but assessing your campus needs and looking for commonalities with other people/campus' action research. I am curious to see how the mentoring program at your school turns out. We have a similar program with students from our high school. I'm not certain that our student-to-student mentor program is offering or achieving all that it was originally designed for. I will be curious to see the reults on your campus.
